COLUMBIA COUNTY, FL – In a report released from the Columbia County Sheriff's Office (CCSO) this morning, Public Information Officer Ed Seifert reported on an apparent suicide intervention by the CCSO which occurred over the weekend.
Sgt. Seifert reported that on April 13, 2013, at approximately 3:55 PM, CCSO deputies were called to a residence off SW Pathfinder Glen in Fort White. There they became involved in a standoff.
According to Sgt. Seifert's report, a man "may have wanted to harm himself."
Sgt. Seifert reported that the CCSO knew that there were firearms in the home.
The Sheriff sent the SWAT team and the Crisis Negotiation Unit to the scene.
Sgt. Seifert said, "The negotiators talked with the man for a few hours, trying to convince him to surrender to deputies peacefully."
Sgt. Seifert continued, "The man exited the home and deputies believed that he was going to leave in a vehicle. An Electronic Control Device [Taser] was deployed and the man was taken into protective custody without further incident. The man was transported to a local crisis intervention facility for evaluation."
Sgt Seifert noted, "Some residents in the area were evacuated or not permitted to return to their homes during the three hour long situation. No injuries were reported during this incident."
There are no criminal charges at this time.
