NFBA -- Old City Hall Demolition -- and more in a busy week

From City Manager Wendell Johnson

North Florida Broadband Authority (NFBA)

The NFBA met this week at the Suwannee Water Management District Office in Live Oak.

As you know, the U.S. Department of Commerce awarded NFBA more than $30 million to enable and enhance real access to Broadband and high-speed connectivity for our fourteen county region.

With the award, the NFBA is moving aggressively ahead with getting the project “Shovel Ready” to satisfy grant criteria.

Among the more important agenda items this week was the announcement of AireWire, Inc., who will serve to provide Project Mobilization Services for the Middle Mile Infrastructure and critical path activities. AireWire will also develop the project budget and schedule.

It is advantageous for increased public attendance at NFBA Board meetings to keep abreast of planning activity leading to the construction phase of the Middle Mile infrastructure, which is scheduled to begin in August 2010 and last over twelve  months.  The NFBA web site is the source of additional information on this monumental project.

Old City Hall Demolition

The City received several bids for demolition services.  The bids ranged from around $50,000 to well over $100,000. A recommendation for a contract award will be made for Council consideration on April 5, 2010.

It is likely the project will be completed before the end of April.

Long time purchasing agent, Debbie Garbett, announces who submitted the proposals. Ms. Garbett told the Observer, "We put everything we request on the City website and on Demand Star. We want to be able to make the best deals for the people of Lake City. Sometimes the best deal isn't always the cheapest.

Fleet Management Services RFP

The City received three qualified proposals for fleet management services.

A committee has been identified to evaluate the proposals during the next few days.

Staff anticipates a recommendation will be made for Council consideration on April 19, 2010.

EMS Services RFP

The draft RFP was distributed to the Committee members this week.

The Committee will meet before the end of next week to review and discuss the draft and authorize its release for publication during the period April 1 – April 30, 2010.

Budget Workshop

The first workshop for the City’s FY 2010/2011 budget is scheduled for March 29, 2010 at 5:30 p.m.

A listing of viable budget enhancement initiatives was provided to the Council this week for review.
