Gas rates & waste water on tap

From City Manager Wendell Johnson

Natural Gas Utility Rate Ordinance
New Rates Coming In January

During June 2010, the City Council reviewed and accepted the “Natural Gas Utility System” Rate Study 2010 prepared by WHH Enterprises, Inc.

In addition to a meter deposit, City Gas rates consist of three components: a customer charge, a gas distribution charge and purchased gas adjustment.

The rate study identified that current residential rates are higher than the average peer group and commercial rates are significantly lower than all members of the commercial peer group. The rate study recommends adjustments to these conditions.

The Council provided authority during June 2010 for the Staff to proceed with the City Ordinance revision for gas utility rate adjustments.

Prior to November 30, 2010, the Staff will complete the “public notice” requirements for the proposed rate adjustments. The draft ordinance will be submitted for review of the City Attorney during the first week of November and first reading of the Ordinance is scheduled for December 6, 2010.  If approved by Council, the effective date for implementation of rate changes is January 2011.

Kicklighter Road Waste Water Treatment Plant Project.
Optimum site identified.

Hatch Mott MacDonald Engineering Services is well underway with the final design phase of the City’s new Kicklighter WWTP.

A major issue in the design process was identifying the “footprint” location for the plant with the objective of favorable placement absent the presence of “sinkhole” subsidence.

Universal Engineering Sciences, Inc. completed the interim subsurface exploration (soil borings/testing) on October 14, 2010 with some good news.

Based upon review of the test results by the Hatch Mott and the City Engineer, it appears that the optimum site has been identified to build the City’s new WWTP.
