Take a Hike with the Doc: Get Lucky, Find a Flowering Herb

COLUMBIA COUNTY, FL – Make time on a Saturday morning to "Take a Hike with the Doc", that is Colette Jacono, PhD: botanist, plant ecologist, and defender of the environment. The hike is along the Santa Fe River area which contains the largest numbers of tree and shrub species per unit area in the continental U.S. The canopy is so dense sunlight touches the ground only in the winter. The 1.5-mile hike along the river is March 24 beginning at 9 am.

The hike is one of many RiverFest 2018 events sponsored by Our Santa Fe River, Inc. this spring.  Dr. Jacono will share her specialization in aquatic and wetland plants during the two-hour hike. The hike kicks off at 9 a.m. at the Gilchrist County Santa Fe River Park, located at the boat ramp on State Road 47.

Participants will search for flowering herbs of early spring, learn the common and uncommon hardwood trees, and recognize the diversity of flowering shrubs that flourish in this fire-free habitat.

The event is limited to 20 participants and costs $20 which benefits Our Santa Fe River, Inc., a North Florida non-profit organization comprised of volunteers. All proceeds are used to educate and advocate for the river, springs and aquifer. Tickets to this event and other RiverFest events can be purchased online at OurSantaFeRiver.org.
