Florida Crown Workforce Board approves   $2,443,281 baseline budget

Florida Crown Workforce Board and Consortium members in the glow of Executive Director, "JC" John Chastain's report to the Board.

The Florida Crown Workforce Board wears many hats. It is the Columbia, Union, Dixie and Gilchrist Counties unemployment and job training and retraining center, veterans office, and gives food stamp assistance and help to folks that are transitioning out of welfare, teaches folks how to use computers, has programs for at risk children and many other things. All Workforce Boards have one of the most complicated funding streams of any agencies in the state. Yesterday afternoon Florida Crown had a Board/Consortium meeting to approve the FY 2011-12 budget and set policies for the coming year.

Larry Thompson chairman of the business committee reported findings of that committee. He said that the only jobs available in the area are those in the health care profession. In May of this year the demand for those jobs was 124 while the available supply of workers was 529.

Mr. Thompson also reported that there were a few jobs in corrections/law enforcement. In May four jobs became available with 181 applicants available to fill those positions.

Executive Director John Chastain reported that through May of this year FCWB served over 35,000 customers.

Next year's baseline budget, FY 2011-2012, which was approved at the meeting is $2,443,281. Last years budget was $2,647,417. This represents a decrease of 9.23%.

Neither the Florida Crown staff nor the independent contractor, Arbor are asking for a raise at this time, although the board approved the issue of a cost-of-living increase to be revisited at the February/March meeting.

The board staff was last awarded a 3% raise in 2009 and a cost-of-living raise of 3% was given in 2010.

This year inflation is exceeding 6%.
