Columbia County Jail Hanging - The Reports Are In Death Called a Suicide - No Wrong Doing

COLUMBIA COUNTY, FL – On October 25, 2018, we reported that an inmate at the Columbia County Jail hung himself in the intake area of the jail. This area of the jail is under video surveillance.

The Columbia County Sheriff's Public Information Officer Murray Smith wrote a press release which we published. As the case was under investigation, this was the only information that was available.

Today, Larry Auger, the Columbia County Sheriff's Office Public Record Access Officer, released the incident report; a statement from Assistant State Attorney John Durrett; and an investigative summary which concluded there was no wrong doing by jail personnel.

We present the documents as written. However, you will see that on page one of the Sheriff's Offense Report we removed the decease's relatives to respect their privacy.
